Fact or Fiction 6.25.12

UFC 147 went down pretty smoothly, especially after all the injuries and changes to the card. Fedor also fought Rizzo, and announced his retirement, so let’s take a look at some pressing issues with J “Yayo” Hernandez and Jorge Rivero:

1. Dana White and Shogun have come up with different stories about Shogun fighting Glover Texiera. This has lead to an internet flame war over Shogun ducking Glover. So, let’s try to get a consensus, did Shogun duck Glover?

JH: FACT

Yes he did. As a matter of fact at UFC 147 Shogun was interviewed about it, and while not agreeing with the Dana White’s contention that he rather be cut than fight Glover, he did say he didn’t want that fight right now. His explanations for not wanting that fight also make sense. He’s trying to get a title shot and a win against Glover who just entered the UFC doesn’t likely do much for his standing. A loss though drops him down to the majority of fans who haven’t heard of Glover’s non-UFC exploits.

JR: FICTION

Shogun is not the kind of fighter that ducks ANYONE.  Taking this fight is a Lose/lose situation for Shogun. If he beats this unknown fighter, he will get no recognition for it. If he gets beaten, his “Stock” will drop like a stone.  Turning down fights is a part of the sport, managers have a duty to match up their fighters with matches that are exciting and in the best interest of their fighter. this was not in the best interest of Shogun

AP: Fiction

Dana White stated that Shogun was offered the fight, but claimed he would leave the UFC before fighting Texiera. Now, both Texiera’s and Shogun’s camps have said that this is not true. I do believe that Shogun declined to fight Texiera, but only because of his lack of name recognition, and that is not ducking a fighter, because ducking implies cowardness!

2. It seems like there have been more changes to the UFC 149 card than there have been at all the events in 2011! Should the UFC scrap the event?

JH: FICTION

If they didn’t scrap UFC 147 as a pay-per-view in the states, then they’re not scrapping UFC 149. UFC 147 was essentially The Ultimate Fighter: Brasil season finale and Zuffa charged us $50 for it without blinking. UFC 149 will be more of the same. As long as they make more money on it than they lose, they’ll put on the card.

JR: Fiction

Scrapping an event over match ups being changed does not seem smart. The fans that have already paid for tickets and are looking for a show would not be happy. The show will go on and new exciting fighters will replace the ones that are injured. UFC always delivers great match ups.

AP: Fiction

Even though the UFC offered fans with UFC 147 tickets an opportunity to refund the tickets, I do not think there would be an easy way to return everyone’s money to them by scrapping the event. It would also be a huge loss for the UFC, and would not be worth it, business wise. Who knows though, maybe this event will turn out to be free depending on how they can salvage it!

3. After his fight with Pedro Rizzo, Fedor announced his retirement. However, we have heard reports in the past that Fedor has retired, and yet he continued to fight, so will Fedor ever fight again?

JH: FACT

If someone is willing to meet his demands, Fedor will fight again. Zuffa, Bellator and Super Fight League are all places you may see Fedor if the price is right.

JR: Fact

The best way to see the future is to look at the past. In he past fedor was rumored to retire and yet he continued to fight. Although i do think it will be easier for him to walk away since he does not live for the sport like chuck or tito, and the fact that he claims his family is the main reason for his departure, i believe it will be the very same reason why he fights again. What i think he means when he says “Retire” is , Retire until the fight comes along.

AP: Fact

Fedor has shown in the past that his emotions after fights have taken control of him, and he announces retirement prematurely. Sure, this one seems more official because he finally would be ending his career on a win. But considering Randy Couture fought until he was 47, and Fedor is comparatively young at 35, we just might see Fedor take some more fights because he can not stay out of the game while his body is able.
