CageJunkies Reviews: Tatami Fightwear BJJ Gi

Hello CageJunkies! I hope you enjoy this thorough review of Martial Arts Supplies, Tatami Nova White Jiu Jitsu Gi. A high quality affordable Gi retailing for $79.99 provided to me by retail supplier MartialArtsSupplies.com who also operates on a wholesale level through http://www.zengu.com/.

Shipping Details-

I received this item fairly quickly in about 5 days. It was packaged in a sturdy heavy duty plastic shipping bag. After opening the shipping bag I found the Gi plus the belt were folded very neatly inside another heavy duty plastic bag. This product was prepared neatly and protected properly to sustain the trip.

Initial Evaluation-

Right away I can tell this was a high quality product, from the stitching to the texture of the weave, to the overall style, it was one of the best I’ve seen. The attention to detail was very impressive, triple-stitched seams, reinforced knee pads, heavy duty rope draw string and  thick rubberized canvas collar. I was actually very surprised to see a heavy duty thick Brazilian Jiu Jitsu style white belt was included with this very affordable Gi. I truly expected a standard karate style white belt, it was a pleasant surprise. Having worn close to a dozen different types of martial arts Gi’s in my life there’s one thing most of the them have in common and that is shrinkage. This Gi was no different; I understood it was 100% cotton so I prepared myself for the shrinkage by ordering one size bigger than the size I would normally wear. After trying it on it was obvious that the Gi was over-sized so I put it to wash in hot water and to machine dry hot as well. The end result was a semi-good fit that could use a bit more shrinking but overall acceptable.

Trial-

I did a 20 day trial that consisted mostly of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappling and some Judo training. The initial reaction of my teammates was an overwhelming approval of my new Gi. Senior belts, including instructors, commented on the excellent texture of the weave and stated that it was soft yet very strong. Even though they reassured me of its strength I was still a bit concerned about it being stretched when pulled on aggressively. After the 20 days I can say that overall it held up very nicely not stretching out, no tearing, and no discoloration whatsoever.

Throughout my trial period I did feel inclined to wash it in hot water two more times to get the size exactly where it needs to be. After that I have washed it several times more in cold water and hung dry, it has not shrunk at all in any of the cold washes. This is an obvious indication that I was dealing with high quality fabric.

Conclusion-

I proudly hang this Gi in my closet and it is the first Gi I reach for when I’m heading out to my BJJ classes. The Tatami brand name holds high regards in my gym and everyone recognizes that the manufacturer’s standards are set very high. Collectively what they don’t realize is this Gi is available for only $79.99 and not a couple hundred dollars as they suspected. The only negative I have to say about this Gi is that I did not buy one sooner. I am very pleased with this product and highly recommend it for everyday use.

From the supplier Martial Arts Supplies:

If you like a patch-less and plain kimono but still want a high quality product, then the Nova Jiu Jitsu Gi is for you. The Nova Gi jacket is made from a surprisingly comfortable and soft “Hybrid Tech” weave. Some weaves become stretchy when they’re this soft, but Tatami’s unique weave keeps its form even when damp from training hard. Nova’s pants are breathable 8 oz cotton twill with reinforced knee padding. Both the top and bottom are kept strong by triple-stitched seams along all stress points.
