CageJunkies Fact or Fiction 08.11.11

Welcome back to this week’s edition of Fact or Fiction: Epic Edition. Last week we had a draw. Something all of us hate. Peter Rivero still remained undefeated, so this week we started looking for the next #1 contender. Today we have CageJunkie original Mario Morales versus Fact or Fiction newcomer Michael Gambino. Will we have another draw or will one of these 2 keyboard warriors take a victory and one step closer to challenging Peter Rivero? So without further ado Lets Do This!

1.  Dennis Hallman came out at UFC 133 to fight in pair of speedos. Probably the only time we have seen this since the Carlos Newton days. Should UFC step in and make a “regulation size” trunks that fighters should wear?

MM – FACT
Look, I’m all about comfort and I understand that the last thing a fighter wants during a fight is to let their clothes get in the way. Some loose clothes are necessary to land those high kicks to the head or a triangle choke submission. But what this dude did was just disrespectful. He embarrassed himself and worst of all his team. He should be fined. From now on all the fighters should be required to wear khaki pants (not really). Seriously though, I’m not a fan of “the bulge” and male butt cheeks.

MG – FACT

I think there should be some kind of regulation on what kind of shorts you can wear in a fight. I mean, the Vale Tudo shorts that GSP or Shogun wear are fine, the boardshort style are fine, and the mini warrior dress shorts that Manhoef are cool as well…. but I don’t think guys should be fighting in banana hammocks. A lot of people are saying that Carlos Newton and Ken Shamrock, along with some other old school guys wore them, so Hallman should be able too as well… but there is a difference between them and him. Their junk never fell out of the shorts mid fight. That alone should be reason to ban those from here on out.

WQ – FACT

I wasn’t a fan of this back when Ken Shamrock fought Royce Gracie. I wasn’t a fan of them when Carlos Newton wore them either, and both of them wore them during title fights. At least they had proven themselves already. Every sport has regulation uniforms and while every MMA fighter shouldn’t have to have the same shorts, they should have at least have a minimum and a maximum length on their shorts.

2. Dan Henderson’s last 3 fights have been KO or TKO wins, with the last one being over the much loved Fedor. Was that the springboard Henderson needed to get back to the UFC?

MM – FICTION (Here’s where I lose all 8 of my fans/readers)

Recent Henderson wins are a fluke, he’s been getting seriously lucky with these beat downs he’s been delivering. Not to mention some of the guys he’s beat are way past their prime. He’s capitalizing on their mistakes, he’s a good fighter but please don’t put him against a guy like Ovince St. Preux or God forbid someone at the level of Jon Jones, he would get murdered.

MG- FACT

Yes. Dan has looked very impressive in his last couple fights and has been finding a home for the H-Bomb (trademark byMauro) and ending fights in spectacular fashion. He has a large fan base and following, and besides maybe Mousasi… there isn’t much competition left for Dan in Strikeforce. So the big fights that the fans want to see can only happen in the UFC at this point. And at Dan’s age/experience, I am sure he is only really looking for those “Big Ticket” type fights. So I say bring him in and lets see Henderson vs Rashad, or Henderson vs Jones!!

WQ – FACT

Hendo has won his last 3 fights, which were all main events in the first by KO or TKO. Henderson has proved he still belongs with the best, and the best belong in UFC. I wouldn’t be suprised to see Zuffa move Hendo back to the UFC soon. Remember readers send all hate mail to Mario@CageJunkies.com.

3. Vitor said he wanted another shot at the title after his win over Akiyama. Dana said he isn’t ready for that yet and needs another few wins before he gets back to being considered for another title shot. Should Vitor have another title shot?

MM – FICTION

I love me some Vitor Belfort (no homo), I think he’s one of the best in the world. He’s one of the strongest most explosive fighters of all time, but to say he is deserving of a title shot right now is non-realistic. He just lost to Anderson Silva and I’m not incredibly impressed with his win against Akiyama; since Akiyama is 1-3 in the UFC. Vitor still has much to prove before he’s given a chance at the title.

MG- FICTION

Although he finished the fight quickly and very impressively (despite finishing it with illegal punches to the back of the head) I do not think he should get a rematch already. He was finished even quicker in his last fight, and didn’t really show anything in the fight, that pointed towards him beating Silva had he not got caught with that kick. I do think he is in the “mix” as Dana likes to say, and that another win or two puts him back in the title fight. I think a match with the winner of Leben/Munoz could be a good one… and if he wins that, then maybe he gets the next shot.

WQ – FICTION

Vitor is one of my favorite fighters of all time. I was the only guy in the bar rooting for him when he fought Silva (and everyone laughed at me after the fight) but I have to agree with Dana (ugh). He got KTFO in the first round. He needs to have some more wins to prove he does deserve to be in that title fight.

4. Tito Ortiz blogged his thoughts on Fedor and him not being the GOAT

“He’s not one of the greatest ever; he did great in Pride but he chose not to come to the UFC and he never fought in the UFC. You can’t be considered one of the best — much less the greatest ever — if you didn’t fight in the UFC. Pride isn’t the UFC and the places he’s been since Pride aren’t the UFC. Everyone who came from Pride to the UFC got stomped.”

Is Tito correct? If you don’t fight in the UFC and win you can’t be considered A GOAT(Greatest of All Time)?

MM – FACT

As much as I dislike Tito “I got beat up by Rashad” Ortiz, I’m going to have to agree with him. In the world of MMA you cannot be known as the “Greatest of all time” until you’ve had some serious success in the UFC. These are some of the toughest fighters on the planet, tried and tested. That’s why when a fighter that has transitioned over from a successful career with non-UFC Corporation, and also has success in the UFC, they stand out like a bright star; Quinton Jackson being the best example I can think if.

MG- FACT

I hate to say it, as I am a big supporter of having more then one “big show” and against MMA monopoly… but at this point in the game, MOST of the best guys are fighting in the UFC, and I don’t think you can put together enough wins over top names to be considered the GOAT, unless you are in the UFC and fighting the best.  I think Fedor did enough in PRIDE/AFFLICTION to be considered the GOAT without fighting in the UFC, but his 3 fight skid kind of hurts that status

WQ – FACT

Football has the NFL, baseball has MLB, basketball the NBA, hockey the NHL and in the MMA world, UFC is the biggest and the best of the bunch. You never have a casual MMA fan say who is so and so fighting against? This is unfortunately something you do see in other shows “main events” To be the GOAT you have to fight on the biggest stage and win. Something Fedor never did.

MM – 3 MG – 4

5. Sticking with the Fedor topic, we all know by now that he was cut by Strikeforce, however he wasn’t cut by Showtime. Was it a smart move by Showtime to keep paying him even though he has 3 bad losses in a row?

MM – FICTION

What a waste of money. He is done, time to retire and learn to paint or go fishing or something. He shows no drive or determination the gas tank has run out. This guy has been a champion fighter going hard with multiple events every year since 1997…every year people! I can’t think of any other fighter that has accomplished as much as he has. With nothing left to prove he is no longer a smart investment.

MG – Fiction

I dont think its a smart move. I don’t think Fedor has a big enough “casual” fanbase to tune in to Showtime to watch him fight on an M-1 card, or whatever it is he will be fighting in. I think a lot of fans still watch events based on the organization. UFC and STRIKEFORCE are known names, and that’s why they watch. I think Showtime will absolutely lose money on this. HOWEVER I am happy with their decision, because I have Showtime and am always down to watch Fedor fight!! haha

WQ – FICTION

You know I was slightly torn on this because I was thinking, “hey man, its Fedor”, but then I remembered, Showtime isn’t pay-per-view, and Fedor really doesn’t have enough fans to make you want to pay X more a month just to see him fight at this point in his career. I would have probably cut my losses if I was Showtime.

MM – 4 MG -5

There you have it guys a close one but Mario had a knock down early in the fights and the points went to Mike. Congratulations Mike. I can’t wait to see you back in the CJ Fact or Fiction ring against your next opponent. Thanks all for ready and we will see you next week.
